As we bring Women’s History Month to a close, we spotlight a leader from the Great State of North Carolina in Pitt County—Sheriff Paula S. Dance. Elected on November 6, 2018, Sheriff Dance made history as the first African American female sheriff in North Carolina and only the fourth in the nation. With over three decades of service, she has dedicated her career to protecting communities, pioneering domestic violence initiatives, and breaking barriers in law enforcement.
Born and raised in Martin County, NC, Sheriff Dance’s journey is rooted in hard work, integrity, and respect for all. From her start as a patrol deputy to her rise as a Major in the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, she shattered ceilings through determination and expertise. But for Sheriff Dance, history-making isn’t the focus—serving the people is. She leads with commitment, community, and justice for everyone, proving that leadership is defined not by race or gender, but by the impact made.
The Lucius D. Amerson, Bridge Builder Foundation proudly celebrates Sheriff Paula Dance and all the incredible women who wear the badge. Your service and sacrifice shape the future—today and always!
