In this week’s Trailblazer for Justice, we honor a living legend etched in the annals of Black History for the State of Mississippi. Frank Davis, made history as the First Black Sheriff Elected in the State of Mississippi and Claiborne County since Reconstruction in 1976. Hailing from Claiborne County as the third of 13 children, Davis pursued education and service, earning a bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University and serving in both Korea and Vietnam with the U.S. Army. A teacher and coach by initial calling, Davis ultimately followed the path of law enforcement, a journey that would span decades.
Urged by a diverse group of pastors and business leaders to run for sheriff, Davis entered a close race that would sever a longstanding friendship with his predecessor. Despite this, Davis was re-elected seven times, each time securing at least 85% of the vote. His leadership extended far beyond his county, as he became the First Black President of the Mississippi Sheriff’s Association in 2000, an achievement he holds among his highest honors in his professional career. Davis was also a founding member and past President of the Mississippi Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), further solidifying his legacy of mentorship and leadership.
Beyond law enforcement, Davis worked to improve the lives of his community’s elderly citizens, building partnerships with local police to ensure their well-being. His impact was so profound that in 2005, U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson filed a proclamation in the House of Representatives, placing Davis’ name in the Congressional Record. As a lifelong member of King David Christian Church, and a proud fan of Alcorn State University football, the Minnesota Vikings, and Philadelphia Eagles, Sheriff Davis’ legacy continues to inspire, marking him as a true Trailblazer for Justice in Mississippi and beyond.
Over the years, Sheriff Davis mentored countless members of the law enforcement cadre in the State of Mississippi and is regarded as the spiritual inspiration for many who were under his mentorship. Sheriff Davis served as Sheriff for 32 years.
