As the first Black Sheriff elected for Grant County, Sheriff Archey shattered barriers and blazed a trail of resilience and perseverance. His journey, chronicled in his book titled, “Going over All the Hurdles,” is a testament to his unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
Born and raised in Marion, Indiana, Sheriff Archey witnessed firsthand the scars of racial injustice that plagued his community. Despite the obstacles, he pursued higher education at Grambling State University, only to encounter further challenges upon returning home but Sheriff Archey refused to be defined by society’s limitations, rising from a janitorial position to become a beloved teacher and coach, inspiring generations with his dedication and leadership.
His commitment to justice led him to serve as a Special Agent with the FBI for two decades before returning to Marion with a bold vision—to become the county’s first Black Sheriff. In 1999, he made history, winning the hearts and trust of the community as he served not one, but two terms as Sheriff, leaving an indelible mark on Grant County.
